Reactive nitrogen compounds like ammonia and nitrate fertilisers are a key resource for food production to feed the world. At the same time human activities through multiple processes lead to losses of reactive nitrogen (nitrous oxides, nitrate,…) to water, soil, and air. The increased abundance of reactive nitrogen in the biosphere leads to numerous effects on the environment, human health, climate and biodiversity. The amount of reactive nitrogen compounds emitted into the environment is far too high. It already exceeds the “safe operating space” for future life on our planet. INI2020, the 8th Global Nitrogen Conference, will be the meeting point for scientists from all over the world dealing with reactive nitrogen compounds in agriculture, industry, traffic, soils, water, and air. They will discuss recent scientific results for more efficiency in food production and decreasing unwanted nitrogen emissions to the biosphere. N³ has been committed to support the preparation and realisation of the conference.
The recent resolution of the fourth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-4) on sustainable nitrogen management recognizes the multiple pollution threats resulting from anthropogenic reactive nitrogen, with adverse effects on the terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. The resolution supports exploring options to achieve the SDGs, including by sharing assessment methodologies and relevant best practices.
INI 2020 will be the place to exchange results, ideas and visions to improve future holistic management of reactive nitrogen. We aim at further reduction of hunger and poverty. At the same time we have to avoid. further hazards for human health, biodiversity, and environmental media.
