Financial incentives for bio-waste separation – the Bin2Bean experience
Separation of organic waste at source is key for the production of compost which serves a a soil improver – most important to keep Europe’s soils fertile. The Bin2Bean project aims at innovations to valorise bio-waste and optimising their recycling into soil improvers through economically viable value chains. Financial incentives can motivate people to separate waste in their households. However, it is very difficult to find the right approach: if the incentive is too low, it has no effect; if it is too high, it often leads to abuse. To investigate this problem in more detail, Bin2Bean recently held a cross-fertilisation workshop prepared by N³ and HiiCCE entitled “Bio-waste & waste charging systems in the EU: best practices, challenges & solutions“.
